I am a "layperson" with the ApoE4 gene, a predisposition to Alzheimer's and Cardiovascular disease. Ketosis provides an alternative fuel source for the brain, low-carb keeps blood sugars down (impaired glucose uptake in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's) but given the peculiarities of this gene I also need to keep saturated fat low and I work at maximizing autophagy (which I do through intermittent fasting.) I'm interested in strategies that will keep my insulin sensitivity up, inflammation down, microbiome healthy, cognition sharp, aging process slow and my genes happy.
